NJ Youth Soccer Hosts Urban United Cup in Jersey City

Over 100 Recreational Players Participated in the Inaugural Event

New Jersey Youth Soccer recently held its first annual US Youth Soccer Urban United Cup, which featured a “4v4” festival for boys’ and girls’ recreation teams. The event was held in connection with the NJYS 4v4 Club Foundation Program, and it was created to provide recreational youth soccer players an opportunity to benefit from a fun hour plus of free play in a street-like soccer playing environment that is player-centered with no referees or coaching.

“A mix of imagination, experimentation and spontaneity were on display during our Jersey City event,” explained Rick Meana, NJYS Director of Coaching. “Children playing soccer in a learning environment that fosters creativity is the beauty of the 4v4 format.”

The event was hosted by the Jersey City Recreation Department at the Cochrane Turf Field with support from Daniel Ali, NJYS Chair of the Soccer Outreach Advisory Board, and it featured teams from Belleville Recreation, Global Soccer Academy, Jersey City Recreation, Jersey Stars, Kearny Thistle United, NASA United FC and NJ Crush. In addition to the 10 active fields, the event featured on-site activation from NJYS partners such as the New York Red Bulls and NJ/NY Gotham FC, as well as GoGo squeeZ.

“It was great to see so many kids of the urban community come together for the common goal of playing soccer and having fun,” stated Charlie Hood of Belleville SC. “There is never enough that we can do for these kids and that’s always been the mission of Metro YSL, and this amazing new initiative of NJYS furthers that mission.”

Over 100 players took part in the 4v4 small-sided games which serves as the smallest version of soccer. In this size of space, young children are able to more easily understand and enjoy the game of soccer.

“At Kearny Thistle United, we firmly believe the 4v4 model provides the players with the proper amount of practice to enhance their opportunities to read and understand the game, while setting a solid foundation for player development,” reflected Coach Ron Kolbinger.

The 4v4 format makes learning and developing more fun because players are constantly in close contact with the ball which maximizes participation and engagement, as well as accelerates skill acquisition and game intelligence of all players involved.

“These 4v4 events are so important for the community and are a great experience for everyone involved, including players, coaches, and parents, and by participating, many players get an opportunity to play that they might not otherwise have” said David Ricca, NJYS ITG Project Consultant. “I am still getting calls and texts about when we will host the next one!”
